Polar Bears in Yarmouth's Lake Milo
2009-03-12

Thursday, January 01, 2009 saw approximately 20 members of Yarmouth Boston Pizza's Polar Bear Club once again brave the elements during their 3rd Annual New Years Day Polar Bear Dip in support of the Yarmouth Fire Department. Firefighters arrived early at the Lake Milo location, in Yarmouth's North end of town, and began clearing the swimming area of heavy slush that had formed. Members wearing protective water rescues suits remained in the water during the swim to provide assistance if needed. At approximately 11:30am swimmers left the comfort and warmth of the Milo Boat Club and made their way to the shoreline. After posing for a group photo organizer, and owner of Yarmouth’s Boston Pizza, Curt Stevens led the group by taking the first plunge into the bone chilling water. After the event both swimmers and firefighters gathered at Boston Pizza where they were treated to a buffet of pizza and salads.
Although organizers had expected close to 75 swimmers a fierce overnight winter storm left many participants snowed in and unable to make the event. Those who did had to contend with high winds and wind chill temperatures of approximately -20c.
This year’s event raised a total of $1008.36 which was donated to the Yarmouth Fire Department. The members of the Yarmouth Fire Department wish to thank Curt Stevens, the staff of Yarmouth Boston Pizza, and all those who “took the plunge” on their behalf. Photo provided by the Yarmouth Vanguard.
