Suspicious Fire Damages Abandoned Apartment Building
A late afternoon fire in an abandoned 2 story apartment building located at 18 Kinney Hill Road in Arcadia, Yarmouth County caused fire damage to both first and second floors. Engine #4, Tankers #22 & 20, Rescue #14 and Unit #27 responded to the 3:30pm page. Engine #4 arrived to find very heavy smoke coming from the building. Firefighters immediately advanced a hand line to the front door in an effort to control the fire burning on the first floor. Tanker #22 arrived and connected a supply line to Engine #4 while Tanker #20 stood by on the main road. Meanwhile, firefighters began advancing another line up an outside stairway at the rear of the building to attack the fire burning upstairs. Firefighters were prevented from entering the upper level due to the severe smoke and the uncertainty of the floors condition. Once the smoke had been ventilated firefighters were able to carefully advance into the upper level and begin extinguishing the fire. Firefighters and equipment were back in service by 6:15pm. At approximately 10:30pm a page went out for the same address as the fire had managed to rekindle itself. Attempts to locate and extinguish the source proved futile and it was decided to bring the building down. After the arrival of an excavator the building was carefully taken down and all hot spots extinguished. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
